Zeybek calls for equality and justice in animal disease compensation
Hüseyin Zeybek, Member of Parliament for the New Left Party of Iskeçe, called for the removal of the tax and insurance requirements for compensation payments to livestock breeders affected by animal diseases, emphasizing the need for equality in compensation across the country.
Zeybek, highlighting the hardships faced by livestock breeders in the Iskeçe and Eastern Macedonia-Thrace regions, urged the Ministry of Agriculture and Food to take the necessary steps for fair implementation. He pointed out that the ongoing demand from breeders and farmer associations to remove the tax and insurance eligibility requirements for compensation, especially for diseases like foot-and-mouth and smallpox, has not been addressed fairly.
In his question to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Zeybek stated:
"The demand for compensation without the requirement for insurance and tax eligibility has been repeatedly expressed by the livestock sector, yet the issue has not been evaluated equitably."
He also noted that, after the 2023 fire disaster in the Evros and Rodopi regions, livestock breeders were exempted from the tax and insurance requirements for compensation. However, this exemption caused significant backlash among breeders in Iskeçe and Eastern Macedonia-Thrace.
Zeybek concluded by demanding that, in cases of animal diseases like smallpox and foot-and-mouth, compensation should be provided equally to all affected breeders across the country, regardless of geographic region or type of damage.
He posed the following questions to the Minister of Agriculture and Food:
- What steps does the Ministry plan to take to eliminate inequalities in compensation payments to livestock breeders?
- Will the Ministry consider lifting the tax and insurance eligibility requirements for all livestock breeders affected by animal diseases, particularly in Iskeçe, Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, and across the country?
