Zeybek brings the building problem of Xanthi Minority Secondary and High School to the parliament

Zeybek, in his parliamentary question, emphasised that the government should solve the building problem of Xanthi Minority Secondary School High School as soon as possible and pointed out that no school in Greece is being educated under these conditions.

Deputy Zeybek emphasised that during his visit to the region recently, Minister of Transport Christos Staikuras announced the projects related to Xanthi Madrasah and Xanthi Music School, but it is extremely meaningful that he did not make any statement about the building problem of Xanthi Minority Secondary School High School, which has been waiting for a solution for years.

Mr Zeybek stated that even though the students and teachers of the school, with the support of the local community, rightfully demanded and succeeded in their struggle for the school to work only in the morning shift, the most important part of their demands remained incomplete and asked about the steps to be taken to solve the building problem.

The parliamentary question addressed to the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs by MP Hüseyin Zeybek is as follows:

"Recently, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Staikouras, during his visit to Komotini before the European elections, announced that there will be some infrastructure investments concerning the region of Thrace.

The society is used to the fact that the government of the New Democracy Party constantly promises development and infrastructure projects that never materialise. Especially in the region of Thrace, the people have no faith in the government, which is unable to deal with the dilapidated infrastructures (falling bridges) as well as the high cost of living.

Basic infrastructural problems persist, especially with regard to school facilities in the region of Xanthi. In his statement from Komotini, Mr Staikouras mentioned the investments to be made in the Madrasah School of Xanthi and the new Music High School to be built in Avdira Municipality, but it is very meaningful that he did not mention the building problem of the Xanthi Minority Secondary School, which is known by everyone and has been voiced for years, and did not make the slightest statement about the school.

Although the students and teachers of the school, with the support of the local community, rightfully demanded and succeeded in their struggle to have the school work only in the morning shift, the most important part of their demands remained incomplete.

The fact that the classrooms in the basement of the school building were not allowed to be used reduced the total number of classrooms from 25 to 20. This resulted in overcrowded classrooms. Crowded classrooms that do not comply with pedagogical elements reduce the motivation and efficiency of both teachers and students, but most importantly, it is a situation that poses serious risks for both students and educators.

The government must realise the seriousness of the building problem of the Xanthi Minority Secondary School High School, the need to resolve it as soon as possible, the safety of students and educators is at stake and must accept that a new school building is essential. There is no school in Greece where education is carried out under these conditions."

Asking about the steps to be taken for the construction of a new school building, MP Zeybek also asked about the measures to be taken for a temporary solution. Hüseyin Zeybek asked the following questions to the Ministry of Education:

"- What do you plan to do in order to initiate the procedures for the construction of a new school building as soon as possible for the final solution of the major building problem that the Xanthi Minority Secondary School High School has been facing for years?

- Do you plan to take urgent measures to reduce the number of pupils in the suffocatingly overcrowded classrooms; do you plan to put prokat classrooms in the annex school building on Hatzistavrou Street, accepting the provisional proposal of the school management, in order to ensure good conditions and equal education for pupils?

- Is solving the building problem of Xanthi Minority Secondary School High School a priority for the YD government? How long will the relevant Ministries continue this bullying against students, parents and educators?"
