Xanthi demonstrates in solidarity with Palestine

A large solidarity rally in support of the Palestinian people was held on Tuesday at the central square of Xanthi, amplifying voices against the state of Israel following its recent raid on the humanitarian aid ship “Madleen.”
Humanitarian Crisis Sparks Outrage
The demonstration was organized in response to Israel’s military operation that blocked critical humanitarian aid, exacerbating the ongoing food crisis in Gaza. According to the organizers, the region is facing severe food insecurity, with the World Food Program reporting that 93% of Gaza’s population is experiencing hunger due to Israel’s intensified blockade since October 2023.
Since the escalation of hostilities in late May, at least 75 Palestinians have been killed, and access to aid centers has been severely restricted due to active combat zones. On June 3, Israeli forces carried out a deadly raid on a food distribution center in Rafah. Since aid distribution began on May 27, at least 102 civilians have been killed and 490 injured at aid points.
Wide Participation from Unions and Student Groups
The protest drew participation from various local unions and associations, including the Union of Private and Retail Employees, the Xanthi Teachers' Union (ELME), the Primary Education Association, and the Student Union of Xanthi.
Following speeches, demonstrators marched through the city center chanting slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine.”
Student Leader Calls Out Greek Government’s Role
Outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in the city, Student Union President Spyros Pafilis gave a speech denouncing Greece’s involvement in “imperialist plans” and its cooperation with Israel. He referred to Israel as a “murderous state” and called on the Greek government to immediately end any form of support to Tel Aviv.
Protesters Demand Action
Participants voiced strong criticism of the Greek government, accusing it of policies that contradict the Greek people’s spirit of solidarity. The demonstration concluded with the following demands:
- Freedom for Palestine
- No support for the state of Israel
- Immediate end to the military occupation of Gaza
- Recognition of the Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, in accordance with UN resolutions
The rally in Xanthi is part of a growing wave of demonstrations across Greece, reflecting widespread public concern and solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.
