Western Thrace Turkish Minority affirms legitimacy of democratically elected Muftis
The Western Thrace Turkish Minority has issued a statement regarding the ongoing legal proceedings related to the appointment of muftis. The community emphasizes that it recognizes muftis chosen freely by the minority itself as legitimate, while rejecting those appointed in ways that contravene international agreements, democratic principles, and the expressed will of the community.
The statement clarifies that recent events should be understood within this framework. The response of the minority, as represented by the four individuals currently on trial, is not aimed at restricting anyone's freedom of worship. Rather, it is an assertion of the community’s collective rights and self-determination, as well as a preventive measure against potential escalations and undesired incidents.
The community expresses faith in the judicial process, emphasizing its respect for the courts and its confidence that the proceedings will be conducted fairly, in accordance with universal principles of law.
The statement further notes that this trial should not be seen solely as a legal matter, but also as an opportunity to address, in a sincere manner, the longstanding issue of muftis in Western Thrace, a matter that has awaited resolution for many years.
