Traffic disruption continues on Yanıkköy vertical axis until Monday afternoon
Traffic disruption remains in effect on the Yanıkköy (Nymfaia) vertical axis in Northern Greece, with authorities confirming that the closure of both traffic lanes will continue at least until 15:00 local time on Monday, March 2.
According to an announcement by the General Regional Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the measure was implemented by decision of the Rhodope Police Directorate due to ongoing repair works addressing road surface subsidence.
Full Closure in Both Directions
The affected stretch covers the section of the vertical axis connecting Gümülcine to the Greek-Bulgarian border at Yanıkköy Border Crossing.
Traffic has been suspended for all vehicles since 15:00 on February 24, 2026. The closure applies to both directions of travel along:
- Kilometer position 4.400 (Kalchas Interchange)
- Kilometer position 18.100 (Nymfaia Interchange)
Authorities stressed that the suspension is necessary to ensure driver safety while technical crews work to restore structural integrity to the affected roadway.
Detour Routes in Effect
During the temporary traffic regulations, all vehicles are being diverted through the regional road network via:
Kalchas Interchange – Karydia Interchange – Pandrosos settlement – Nymfaia Interchange, and vice versa.
Drivers traveling toward the Greek-Bulgarian border are advised to plan additional travel time and follow posted signage.
Strategic Transport Corridor
The Nymfaia vertical axis is considered a key transport corridor linking Northern Greece to Bulgaria, facilitating cross-border trade and regional mobility. Extended disruptions may affect commercial freight traffic and local commuters alike.
Authorities have not ruled out further extensions, depending on the progress of repair works. An updated announcement is expected if conditions change.
