Three in ten people in the Region face poverty risk
In the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region, 31.9% of residents are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, according to recent data.
Eurostat figures show that while the average poverty rate across the European Union stands at 21.4%, this figure is significantly higher in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace at 31.9%. The report also highlights notable disparities between this region and other areas such as Attica and popular tourist destinations.
Across the EU, 94.6 million people (21.4% of the population) are at risk of poverty and social exclusion. In Greece, data from 2023 reveals that the Peloponnese has a poverty rate of 35.7%, Western Greece stands at 35.2%, and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace at 31.9%. In contrast, Attica records a much lower rate of 22.7%.
Among EU countries, Romania has the highest national rate at 32%, followed by Bulgaria at 30%, Spain at 26.5%, and Greece at 26.1%.
At the regional level, the highest rates of poverty or social exclusion risk are found in France’s overseas territories, southern Italy, and rural areas of Romania.
