Students take center stage in mobility week in eastern Macedonia and Thrace
Students are taking center stage as the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace concludes its activities for European Mobility Week 2026 on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
Under the theme “Mobility for all – Justice between generations,” the program is culminating with a Car-Free Day and events highlighting student creativity and innovation.
Elected officials, ministry and agency representatives, regional authorities and students from the Meriç (Evros) regional unit are leaving their cars behind and traveling by public transport from Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) to Gümülcine (Komotini).
Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis is scheduled to depart from Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) port at 8:30 a.m., where he will make statements to local media before the journey.
Students from Drama, Kavala and İskeçe (Xanthi) are also taking part in symbolic journeys, with the groups heading to the Megaron Music Hall in Gümülcine (Komotini).
Student ideas take center stage
A conference titled “European Mobility Week 2026: Mobility for all – Justice between generations” is being held at the Megaron Music Hall in Gümülcine (Komotini) at 10 a.m.
The event will be followed at noon by an awards ceremony for the “Smart Mobility – Student Innovation in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace 2026” competition.
The student proposals focus on creating more sustainable, accessible and modern ways of moving around, highlighting the role of young people in shaping future transport and public spaces.
The activities bring the region’s European Mobility Week program to a close, with a focus on sustainable transport and the active participation of the younger generation.
