Severe drought in Thrace for the second consecutive year

As 2024 draws to a close, Thrace faces a significant drought for the second consecutive year, with rainfall levels hitting historic lows.

According to data from geogreece.gr, the average annual rainfall in the region typically ranges between 450 and 650 mm. However, this year’s rainfall dropped to 250-490 mm, reflecting a deficit of 25-45%. This decline continues the same trend observed in 2023.

The loss of one million acres of forest has further exacerbated the microclimate, particularly in Eastern Rhodope and southern Evros, impacting primary production, soil conditions, forest ecosystems, and the composition of plant, insect, and animal populations.

2024 Annual Rainfall Data (so far):

Xanthi: 435 mm
Kosmio, Rhodope: 487 mm
Imeros, Rhodope: 269 mm
Proskinites, Rhodope: 320 mm
Samothrace: 263 mm
Alexandroupoli (Egnatia Junction): 340 mm
Alexandroupoli (Port): 255 mm
Metaxades, Evros: 367 mm
Didymoteicho: 407 mm
Orestiada: 329 mm

The ongoing drought is expected to have long-term effects, making it imperative to implement water resource management strategies and restore damaged ecosystems.
