PULS Missile Systems on Parliament’s Agenda: Deployment planned for Meriç and the Aegean Islands
The Hellenic Parliament’s special defense committee is set to discuss tomorrow (Thursday, December 4) the procurement of Israeli-made PULS Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS). The €692 million program will form a key component of Greece’s modern defense doctrine, particularly the “Achilles’ Shield” missile defense strategy.
According to Kathimerini, the committee will also review three additional defense projects, including the renewal of mine detection and disposal systems (costing around €100 million), the modernization of 5-inch gun systems on MEKO frigates, and the acquisition of new electronic warfare systems.
36 Launchers, Full Ammunition Package, and Training
Following lengthy negotiations between Athens and Jerusalem, Greece is expected to receive 36 PULS launchers, along with a full ammunition package, training, and logistical support. The systems will be integrated onto IVECO 6x6 vehicles, which Greece aims to acquire through a low-interest loan under the SAFE program.
Predator Hawk ER and Other Munitions
The PULS system stands out for its wide range of ammunition options. The munitions planned for Greece include:
- Predator Hawk ER ballistic missile (range exceeding 300 km)
- EXTRA missiles (range 150 km)
- ACCULAR rockets (range 40 km)
Sources indicate that the state-to-state agreement may also include the SkyStriker loitering munition, with a range exceeding 250 km. SkyStriker can carry out autonomous strikes or be used for target designation.
With this ammunition package, PULS will be capable of striking critical infrastructure such as airbases, radar stations, energy installations, and bridges.
30% Domestic Industry Participation
The Ministry of Defense aims for approximately 30% of the program’s value to be covered by Greece’s domestic defense industry. Israeli manufacturer Elbit is expected to provide technology transfer and training for Greek technical personnel, enabling certain components to be produced locally.
Deployment to Evros and the Aegean Islands
The report states that PULS systems will be deployed in the Evros (Meriç) region, the eastern Aegean, and the Dodecanese Islands.
In the second phase, Greece plans to upgrade its existing M270 MLRS units to the M270A2 standard and is also considering the purchase of a number of HIMARS systems.
Athens has additionally requested the 500 km-range PrSM missile from the United States, though Washington has not yet issued an official response.
