At the opening ceremony of a new medrese (Islamic school) in Xanthi on October 11, Yorgos Kalantzis, Secretary-General of Religious Affairs at the Ministry of Education, made remarks that sparked controversy.
Provocative statements by Kalantzis at the opening of Medrese in Xanthi: Intimidation towards the Western Thrace Turkish Minority

Known for his role in policies that have long been seen as unjust towards the Western Thrace Turkish Minority, Kalancis emphasized, "Greece respects the religious freedom of all its citizens. We do not negotiate or compromise on their rights with anyone."

Tension Rises with Contradictory Statements

Kalancis’ statements came amid ongoing tensions between Türkiye and Greece over minority rights. His reference to religious freedom was viewed by many as contradictory, given the long-standing restrictions faced by the Western Thrace Turkish Minority. Kalancis' comments on reciprocity concerning minority rights were seen as a direct provocation against the community.

Friday Prayer Incident as a Show of Power

Following the medrese’s opening, Kalancis sent his appointed deputy muftis to lead Friday prayers at Xanthi’s Çınar Mosque, which was perceived by the Turkish Muslim minority as a form of blackmail. In response, the local community stood firm, praying with their elected mufti, Mustafa Trampa, rejecting the provocation. Kalancis’ actions were viewed as part of Greece’s broader attempts to exert pressure on the minority.

Double Standards: The Medrese vs. Minority Schools

The newly inaugurated medrese building was previously a plasterboard workshop, renovated with €500,000 from the Greek government. Meanwhile, the Xanthi Minority High School, which serves over 500 students and operates in an old tobacco warehouse, has long been neglected by the state. This discrepancy highlights the double standards in Greece’s approach to minority education, further fueling criticism.

Attendees at the Opening

The event was attended by high-profile figures, including the Metropolitan of Xanthi, appointed muftis, students, and local officials, including the Deputy Regional Governor Brika and education authorities. However, the Western Thrace Turkish Minority views such events as attempts to mask ongoing oppressive policies.

This incident once again exposes the deep-rooted issues regarding minority rights and Greece’s treatment of its Turkish community in Western Thrace.
