Planned roadblock on Makaza–Yanıkköy border crossing over Rudozem Route dispute

According to Bulgarian National Radio, a protest is being organized for Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3 that could block the MakazaYanıkköy vertical axis, a major border crossing between Greece and Bulgaria. The protest aims to pressure Greek authorities into completing the unfinished section of the Rudozem–İskeçe border route, which remains closed despite construction having been completed on the Bulgarian side.

The demonstration is being led by activist Todor Batkov, who claims the blockade will take place between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM on both days—a time of heavy traffic, especially with the start of the vacation season for many Bulgarian and Romanian tourists.

The Demand: Open the Rudozem Crossing
The core demand is the opening of the Rudozem border crossing, a long-planned transit route intended to ease congestion and provide an alternative passage between the two countries. Bulgaria has reportedly completed its obligations, while the Greek side remains incomplete, leaving the route unusable.

Potential Impact
If carried out, the roadblock could significantly disrupt travel and tourism flows, particularly affecting families and tourists heading toward Greek coastal destinations. The Makaza–Nymfaia axis is a vital gateway for Northern Greek tourism, often experiencing long queues during peak weekends.

It remains to be seen how Greek and Bulgarian authorities will respond and whether the protest will gain broader support or escalate further.
