Pilot implementation of demographic policy observatory in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

The European Commission will fund the creation of a Demographic Policy Observatory, which will be piloted in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, through the European Social Fund (ESF+), according to a response by EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Roxana Minzatou, to a question raised by New Democracy MEP Giorgos Aftias.
Aftias had requested urgent measures to address Greece’s demographic problem. In her reply, Commissioner Minzatou stressed that the Commission is examining “a wide range of adaptation measures for the labor market, pension systems, healthcare, childcare, long-term care, as well as other interventions for demographic challenges.”
She highlighted that the Commission has put forward initiatives designed to create favorable conditions for people to plan their lives and fulfill family aspirations, supported by EU cohesion policy funds. These initiatives include:
- A roadmap for quality jobs,
- A strategy to combat poverty,
- A European plan for affordable housing.
Through ESF+ support, Greece will establish a National Demographic Policy Observatory, which will contribute to the implementation of the national action plan on demographics and strengthen the public administration’s capacity to design targeted interventions at both national and regional levels.
Within the framework of the Technical Support Instrument (TSI), evidence-based tools will be developed for the Observatory’s work, along with methodologies and guidelines for preparing regional demographic action plans—with the first pilot program in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
