Özgür Ferhat submits inquiry on small ruminant plague outbreak

The inquiry, directed to the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Kostas Çiaras, addresses the severe impact on livestock farmers.
In his inquiry, MP Ferhat stated, “The plague (PPR) outbreak, which began in Trikala and has spread to the Rodopi region, is part of a series of outbreaks affecting small ruminants, causing significant damage to the livestock sector in our country.” Ferhat emphasized the need for compensation, suggesting that each infected goat or sheep should receive a minimum of €350 in compensation. To date, approximately 474 sheep from 3 livestock farms have been culled due to the virus.
Ferhat raised the following questions to the Minister:
How did the small ruminant plague enter the country?
What state controls have been implemented to prevent the outbreak's entry and spread?
What are the plans to fully compensate affected farmers and cover their lost income?
Do you plan to hire more veterinary staff to strengthen inspection services?
Will you cover the costs of feed and disinfection incurred by farmers due to the outbreak?
Will you compensate farmers for the lost income caused by the ban on milk sales?
In addition to the compensation outlined in the official decision (ΦΕΚ Β’ 5016/27-10-2021), do you plan to offer additional aid from the EU or state budget?
