Özgür Ferhat speaks at the annual conference of the Union of Greek Regions
Özgür Ferhat, a member of the Rodopi New Left Party, spoke at the Annual Conference of the Union of Greek Regions, representing his party leader, Alexis Haritsis. During his speech, Ferhat emphasized the crucial role regions play in the country’s democratic processes and development. He acknowledged that the "Kallikratis" law, which has been in effect for 13 years, has proven the importance of the regional governance model. However, he pointed out that it still lacks a clear legal framework, sufficient resources, and true autonomy.
Key points of Ferhat's speech included:
Critique of the Current Situation: Ferhat highlighted critical issues faced by regions, such as jurisdictional confusion, staffing shortages, inadequate funding, and excessive central government control. He noted that 40% of personnel positions in the Attica region are vacant.
Call for Change: Ferhat argued that regions should not merely be extensions of the central government. Instead, they must function as dynamic structures promoting sustainable development, transparency, and democratic participation.
New Left’s Proposals:
Ferhat outlined the New Left Party’s key demands for strengthening the regions:
A fair electoral system encouraging cooperation between all political groups.
Clearer distribution of authority between regions, municipalities, and the central government.
Adequate financial and personnel support for regions.
Implementation of metropolitan governance practices to address local issues.
Effective utilization of Recovery Fund resources.
Ferhat concluded by urging the participants to act with courage and cooperation, emphasizing that regional leadership should be a driving force behind social and economic revitalization. He said, “We cannot afford stagnation. Regions can be models of solidarity and innovation by bringing citizens closer to decision-making centers.”
