'No to Gold' from Komotini Municipality
The city council declared that it was against the gold prospecting efforts in its unanimous decision.
Komotini Municipality Council discussed the gold prospecting activities in the region in its emergency meeting yesterday (Wednesday, 22 June).
At the meeting where the Supreme Court's decision in favor of gold companies in 2020 was discussed, all the lists in the parliament stated that they were against gold prospecting.
At the meeting, both Mayor Yannis Garanis and the representatives of the opposition list agreed that the gold prospecting would cause great harm to the environment and that agriculture and animal husbandry would be adversely affected by these efforts.
After the meeting, the declaration published by the Komotini Municipality Council against the gold prospecting efforts in 2012 was unanimously re-approved.
Making a statement on the subject, Mayor Garanis emphasized that it would be important for similar decisions to be taken by the Maronya – Şapçı, Kozlukebir and Alexandroupolis municipal councils.
As it is known, in the past years, some companies wanted to search for gold in 16 regions, most of which are within the borders of Maronya - Şapçı municipality, but the issue was brought to the judiciary after the reaction of the people of the region and the politicians.
