MP of Xanthi’s New Left Party, Hüseyin Zeybek, raised the issue of limiting the powers of minority school boards in a parliamentary question submitted to the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports.
MP Zeybek: "The government's actions are aimed at punishing Minority Education"

Zeybek emphasized that the government's actions concerning minority schools are aimed at punishing the minority community and the educational sector.

In his parliamentary question, Zeybek stated, "As the new academic year begins, the problems in education in Xanthi are increasing, with the sole responsibility lying with the New Democracy government (school closures, class mergers, the unresolved building issue of the Xanthi Minority High School for years, etc.). The recent decision to appoint a principal and deputy principal to the Xanthi Minority Middle-High School is aimed at punishing the minority community and the educational sector."

Zeybek recalled the 2013 law introduced by the then PASOK-New Democracy coalition government's Minister of Education, Arvanitopoulos, which limited the responsibilities and powers of the school boards in minority schools. He noted that "these developments have caused great turmoil and concern within the community, and the official stance of the New Democracy government on this coercive and punitive law concerning minority education remains a point of interest."

In his parliamentary question, Zeybek also referenced the 2018 law passed by the SYRIZA government, which significantly improved the functioning of minority schools and placed the Xanthi Minority High School on equal footing with other minority primary schools, such as the Celal Bayar High School in Komotini.

Zeybek posed the following questions to the Minister of Education:

Why has the government removed the right to elect the principal and deputy principal of the Xanthi Minority Middle-High School, disregarding the authority of the School Board?

Does the law suggest that the government, by investing in authoritarianism, coercion, and division, is attempting to change the general status of minority schools, undermine the School Board, and limit its powers?

These actions are seen as an attempt to weaken the educational rights of the minority community.
