Greek communists condemn U.S. military refueling stop at Dedeağaç Airport

In a statement released by the regional branch of the Communist Party of Greece in Meriç, officials confirmed that three refueling military aircraft landed at Dedağaç Demokritos Airport late Sunday night to refuel.

According to the party, reports indicate the aircraft had departed from the Middle East and were en route to another European destination.

“War Hub” Accusation
The KKE argued that the incident underscores Greece’s growing role in the military strategies of the United States, NATO, and the European Union.

In its statement, the party described Alexandroupoli as being transformed into a “war hub,” citing the combined strategic use of its port, airport, road, and rail infrastructure for military logistics.

Criticism of Successive Governments
The communists also directed criticism at the ruling New Democracy government, as well as previous administrations led by SYRIZA and PASOK. The party accused all three of supporting policies that deepen Greece’s involvement in international military frameworks.

Call for Withdrawal from Military Alliances
The KKE called for Greece to disengage from foreign military plans, shut down NATO bases within its territory, and recall Greek armed forces deployed abroad. The statement also urged the public to mobilize against what it described as dangerous geopolitical entanglements.

Strategic Importance of Dedeağaç
Alexandroupoli has gained increasing geopolitical significance in recent years due to its proximity to the Balkans and Eastern Europe, serving as a key transit and logistics point for NATO operations, particularly amid heightened tensions linked to conflicts in neighboring regions.
