Greece’s Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Mihailidu, has announced that the government will expand the €10,000 relocation grant program aimed at boosting population growth in underpopulated regions.

Speaking to state broadcaster ERT, Mihailidu said the program—initially implemented in the Evros (Meriç) region—will be extended to six additional regional units: Drama, Kilkis, Serres, Florina, Pella and Kastoria (Kesriye).

Tackling Demographic Decline and Supporting Rural Areas

The minister underlined that the primary objective of the expanded program is to address Greece’s demographic challenges and support rural and border regions facing population decline.

She also noted that efforts are underway to allow beneficiaries to combine the relocation grant with employment and support schemes offered by the Greek Public Employment Service (DYPA), enhancing the program’s effectiveness.

Program to Launch in March

Providing details on the timeline, Mihailidu stated that the program will come into force in March, following the completion of the necessary legal framework. The eligibility criteria and application conditions are expected to be clarified in the coming weeks.

Referring to the first phase of the program in Meriç, the minister said that around 700 applications were submitted, but not all were approved.

She revealed that some applicants attempted to mislead authorities in order to qualify for the €10,000 grant, despite already residing in the region for a long period.

“We received approximately 700 applications, but unfortunately many involved attempts to deceive the state,” Mihailidu said.

Who Is Currently Eligible?

Under the existing scheme, the relocation grant applies to individuals who permanently move to the municipalities of Sofulu, Dimetoka and Kumçiftliği in the Meriç region.

The financial support is structured as follows:

  • €10,000 for relocation to settlements with a population of up to 500 residents
  • €6,000 for relocation to settlements with more than 500 residents
  • In addition, the grant increases by €1,000 for each minor child in the household, with the total support capped at €10,000.

Payments are made by the Organisation for Welfare Benefits and Social Solidarity (OPEKA).

The expansion of the program is expected to play a key role in revitalising rural communities, strengthening border regions and encouraging young families to relocate.
