Pension Increases and Social Security Reductions Announced

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the new program during the opening speech of the 88th Thessaloniki International Fair. In his address, he outlined key changes to the government’s agenda for the remainder of his term, including increases in pensions and public sector wages, and reductions in social security contributions, particularly for low-income citizens.

To combat Greece’s declining population, Mitsotakis also mentioned plans to increase financial support for parents.

Housing Crisis

Mitsotakis highlighted measures to address the housing shortage, particularly in tourist-heavy areas. Property owners with vacant homes will be exempt from taxes on rental income for three years if they rent out their properties. The same incentive will apply to those currently renting through short-term platforms, such as Airbnb, if they switch to long-term leases.

In contrast, taxes will increase for those moving from long-term to short-term rentals. Additionally, no new properties will be allowed for short-term rental in three neighborhoods of Athens for at least one year.
