The Greek government plans to make the Evros region the center of political and diplomatic developments in the coming weeks, according to reports in the national press.
Government aims to turn Evros into a geostrategic hub

The government has set a new agenda aimed at transforming Evros into a "geostrategic hub" by strengthening the region's role. The agenda focuses on three main areas: border security, energy infrastructure—particularly the floating liquefied natural gas storage and regasification terminal (FSRU)—and economic development.

Reports indicate that the recent inspection of the steel border fence by Citizens' Protection Minister Mihalis Chrisochoidis, along with his announcement that the fence extension would be completed on time, had symbolic significance. Meanwhile, Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos and Deputy Minister Thanasis Kontogeorgis, who is part of the Prime Minister’s office, visited the region to prepare for upcoming initiatives.

The visits by Theodorikakos and Kontogeorgis are seen as preparations for Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' planned trip to the region in early October. Mitsotakis is expected to attend the opening of the LNG terminal and highlight Greece’s stance on migration, the strategic role of Evros in Southeastern and Central Europe's energy security, and the regional development plan for Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, which includes infrastructure projects under the "Post-Evros" initiative launched after the 2023 wildfire disaster.
