Free public bicycle system relaunched in Dedeağaç after major overhaul
The free public bicycle system in Alexandroupoli has officially resumed operations following an extensive maintenance and modernization process, local authorities confirmed.
The initiative, designed to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable transportation, had been temporarily suspended for repairs and upgrades. According to Deputy Mayor Ioannis Naitidis, the system’s technical and digital infrastructure has been significantly improved, while all bicycles were refurbished and redistributed across docking stations.
Residents and visitors can once again benefit from free, alternative mobility options across the city, reinforcing Alexandroupoli’s commitment to green urban planning.
However, the relaunch has also highlighted ongoing challenges. A report by IGNOMI revealed that several bicycles sustained serious damage due to vandalism during the downtime. Authorities confirmed that at least seven bikes were heavily damaged, resulting in substantial repair costs.
Municipal officials emphasized that stricter measures will be implemented to prevent further damage to public property. Maintenance and monitoring efforts are expected to continue as part of the system’s long-term sustainability strategy.
Alexandroupoli currently features approximately 9 kilometers of dedicated cycling paths, with additional routes under construction to further expand the city’s cycling infrastructure.
