Court officials also called for the Ottoman building
The historical court building, one of the most important Ottoman architectural works of the region, which was built as a government house in the Ottoman period in Komotini, is about to be demolished!
The courthouse, where Dr. Sadık Ahmet was also judged, is struggling with being abandoned to its fate.
Operating as a courthouse until about 20 years ago, this Ottoman monument was abandoned to its fate when the new courthouse became operational.
It seems impossible for the building, which has been in danger of collapse for many years due to neglect, to survive any longer.
As it will be remembered, Komotini Municipality requested that the building rented to the municipality for 30 years a few years ago.
HISTORICAL BUILDING OF OTTOMAN WORK
The government building in Komotini, which was a sanjak of Edirne province during the Ottoman Empire, was built in 1872 in the district where the Turks lived.
The "Turkish Republic of Western Thrace" was founded in 1913 in the building, which served as the Government House during the Ottoman period.
When the city was given to the Bulgarians by the Treaty of Bucharest in 1913, it was used as a headquarters by the Bulgarian administration until 1919.
Pamikos Zimvrakakis, the 9th Division Commander in Serres, who entered Komotini when Western Thrace was given to Greece with the Neygi and Sevres treaties after 1920, took over the city in this historical building.
After the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, the historical building served as the Komotini courthouse.
This historical building was used as a courthouse until 2004. The building, which has not been used for nearly 20 years, has been abandoned to its fate.
Judged in this building, Dr. Sadık Ahmet said, “I am being jailed today for saying I am Turkish. If being Turkish is a crime, I repeat this: I am Turkish and will remain so.”
Unfortunately this historic building is struggling with its own desolation today.
