Car chased by police crashed in Gökçeler
On Wednesday 27 March, police chasing a vehicle carrying illegal refugees caused a traffic accident.
The people smuggler, who is understood to be a foreign national, and 6 illegal refugees he was carrying were seriously injured. Ambulance and fire brigade teams arrived at the scene. The seriously injured people were transferred to Xanthi State Hospital by ambulances.
According to the statement made by the Security Directorate, the smuggler in question did not obey the stop warning of the Şapçı Police teams and tried to escape from the police. After a long chase, the vehicle driven by the smuggler had a traffic accident in Gökçeler village of Xanthi.
The person arrested for driving without a licence and carrying illegal refugees will be taken to the prosecutor's office after his treatment at Xanthi State Hospital.
It was noted that the driver of the vehicle carrying illegal immigrants initially did not obey the stop sign of the police and made dangerous manoeuvres by increasing his speed, the vehicle then collided with another vehicle in which two citizens were travelling and became immobilised.
The residents of Gökçeler village witnessed the accident that occurred at a time when they were in cafes and shops.
The smuggler, three passengers and two citizens were seriously injured in the accident. The injured were taken to Xanthi Hospital.
The police department found out that the vehicle carrying the illegal immigrants had been reported stolen on 26 March 2024 at a police station in Thessaloniki.
