Bulgarian truck driver charged over fatal highway crash

The deadly crash occurred on Monday near the Yassıköy (Iasmos) toll station, where three people lost their lives and one woman was seriously injured.
A Bulgarian truck driver has been charged with negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, and dangerous driving following a tragic accident on the Egnatia Highway in northern Greece, prosecutors announced on Tuesday.
According to authorities, the accident happened when one of two cars traveling ahead either slowed down or came to a stop about 600 meters from the tolls. The truck, unable to avoid a collision, crashed violently into the vehicle, causing it to burst into flames.
Three passengers were burned to death, while a 49-year-old woman sustained severe injuries. The burning car then collided with a second vehicle carrying relatives of the victims, who managed to escape unharmed.
The truck driver was rushed to Gümülcine (Komotini) General Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He remains under guard but is reported to be in stable condition and out of danger.
Prosecutors said that once his health allows, he will appear before an investigating magistrate to testify about the circumstances of the crash, which is still under investigation.
