Award for the Municipality of Xanthi for drone use in fire prevention
The Municipality of Xanthi received an important recognition for its contribution to monitoring forest areas during the 2024 fire season using drones. The municipality was one of the 12 awarded by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. The award ceremony took place on December 10, 2024, at the Ministry's Amphitheater, during an event evaluating the 2024 fire season. The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the Minister of Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, were present.
Xanthi Mayor Stratos Kontos, along with Deputy Mayor of Civil Protection Giannis Tsapalis, received the award. Tsapalis expressed pride and honor, emphasizing that the award is a recognition of the efforts by Civil Protection to safeguard citizens' lives and property. He highlighted the critical role drones played in detecting fires quickly, enabling immediate action by the Fire Department. Tsapalis dedicated the award to the Fire Service, drone operators, vehicle drivers, and volunteers who contributed to the success during the challenging fire season.
