Second fire detection drone strengthens surveillance in Rhodope

A second advanced drone has been deployed in Rhodope to strengthen fire prevention and the early detection of emergencies across the region.

The new drone has been installed at the former primary school in Proskynites, in the Municipality of Şapçı-Maronya (Maroneia-Sapes), and will monitor the plains and coastline of the regional unit.

The system is designed to operate in winds of up to 20 meters per second and is waterproof. It is equipped with a high-definition camera and a thermal camera, allowing surveillance operations to continue at night.

50-kilometer viewing range

The drone has an imaging range of up to 50 kilometers in a straight line, giving it the potential to monitor areas as far as İskeçe (Xanthi) under suitable conditions.

Using artificial intelligence, the system can detect the movement of people, vehicles and boats, strengthening authorities’ ability to identify and respond quickly to potential incidents.

Coverage from mountains to coast

The first drone has been operating since the start of the fire prevention season on May 1 from the former primary school in the settlement of Hacıören (Vyrsini), in the Municipality of Kozlukebir (Arriana), at an altitude of about 600 meters.

Its mission is to monitor the mountainous area, which contains extensive ecosystems, rich wildlife and dense forest areas, including the Nymfaia forest.

The two drones operate in coordination, expanding surveillance coverage and helping eliminate blind spots. They can also provide precise geolocation of detected incidents.

12 drones across the region

The deployment is part of the civil protection strategy of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, which places particular emphasis on prevention and early intervention.

The region has deployed a total of 12 drones across its five regional units — Meriç (Evros), Rhodope, İskeçe (Xanthi), Kavala and Drama — creating an expanded aerial surveillance network for the fire prevention season.
