ABTTF reacts to Yerapetritis' statement on Fredi Beleri's release
In a statement, the ABTTF acknowledged that while the release of Beleri after approximately 16 months of detention is a positive development, it does not cover up the issues related to the rule of law and fundamental norms. Yerapetritis emphasized that Greece would continue to closely monitor the situation of the ethnic Greek minority in Albania and highlight matters related to international law and European legal frameworks.
The statement also recalled that Fredi Beleri, who was elected as the mayor of Himara in the local elections on May 14, 2023, was arrested on charges of active corruption during the elections.
Commenting on the situation, ABTTF President Halit Habipoğlu said, "It is quite normal for our country to defend the rights of the Greek minority in Albania. However, while Foreign Minister Yerapetritis criticizes Albania for not respecting the rule of law, we expect the same sensitivity towards our community, which has faced systematic discrimination and rights violations in our country, a member of the EU since 1981. Our country has violated the rule of law by not implementing the European Court of Human Rights' decisions regarding our associations for over 16 years, disregarding its international legal obligations. Before giving lessons on the rule of law and fundamental rights to other countries, our leaders should reflect on our own country. As confirmed by the European Parliament's resolution and the latest report from the European Commission, they should abandon the rhetoric that manipulates the truth, which no longer convinces the international community."
