28 October "OHİ DAY" celebrated with enthusiasm in Greece
The "Ohi" holiday, which is the symbol of the resistance of the Greek people against the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini's desire to invade Greece and which resulted in victory, is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the country this year as it is every year. Within the scope of the holiday, ceremonies were organised in the capital Athens and other cities, districts and large villages.
In the celebrations held in Komotini and Xanthi, members of non-governmental organisations engaged in cultural and sports activities, students from minority and majority schools and soldiers participated in the parade.
During the celebrations in Western Thrace, minority and majority people watched the parades together. The 28 October Ohi Festival programme in Komotini started with a religious service in the church. Then a wreath was laid by the authorities at the Sword Monument in the city centre. The parade started with the protocol members taking their places, followed by the parade of non-governmental organisations and students. The ceremony ended with the parade of soldiers.
Georgios Stratatos, Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture of the New Democracy Party government, officiated at the ceremony in Komotini, while Rhodope MPs, President of the Province of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Christodoulos Topsidis, Deputy President Emanuil Tapacas, Mayor of Komotini Yannis Garanis, Deputy Mayor of Komotini Hasan Hasan, Mayor of Kozlukebir Erdem Hüseyin, police, military and religious leaders also attended the ceremony.
The Consul General of Turkey in Komotini Aykut Ünal also attended the ceremony.
