Greece is closing Turkish Minority schools on the pretext of the decrease in the number of students in Western Thrace.
According to the protocol numbered 30.07.2021/Φ.2.1./6762 of the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Schools of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Province, 12 more minority schools are suspending education in the 2021-2022 academic year.
The Greek state, which denies the Turkish identity, suspends education in minority schools on the pretext of lack of students. If the number of children does not increase for a certain period of time, schools are closed completely.
While in Turkey new schools have been opened for 2 students as a sign of goodwill in recent years, many schools belonging to the Western Thrace Turkish Minority in Greece have been closed on the pretext of student shortage. With the final decision, 8 schools in Rhodope and 4 schools in Xanthi were closed. Thus, the number of Turkish Minority primary schools decreased from 231 to 107 together with the ones that were closed so far.
