MP Hüseyin Zeybek questions suspension of 12 schools in İskeçe

New Left MP Hüseyin Zeybek has submitted a parliamentary question to the Greek government over the planned suspension of operations at 12 primary schools in the regional unit of İskeçe, including the Turkish minority schools in Boyacılar (Vafeika) and Beyköy (Avato).

Addressing the Ministers of Education and Interior, Zeybek requested clarification regarding the criteria used for the decision and asked whether alternative measures had been considered before suspending the schools' operations.

He argued that closing schools in rural communities accelerates depopulation, weakens local social life and places additional burdens on students and their families. Zeybek also underlined the special status of Turkish minority schools, emphasizing that access to minority education is protected under the Treaty of Lausanne.

The parliamentary initiative comes amid increasing concern among representatives of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority over recent decisions affecting minority education in the region, with critics warning that such measures could further restrict access to education in minority communities.
