Border wall to be built along Edirne’s frontier

Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer has announced plans to construct a border wall along Türkiye’s western frontier, stating that an initial 8.5-kilometer section will be built this year, with further extensions planned for the future.
In a press briefing, Governor Sezer emphasized the importance of reinforcing border security and preventing illegal crossings.
As part of these efforts, 325 kilometers of border roads were improved last year, and work continues on the construction of electro-optical towers and other security measures.
“This year, for the first time, we will implement physical border security measures along our western frontier,” Sezer said. “A border wall and fences will be installed. Until now, we only had patrol roads, but now, just like on our eastern border, we are implementing physical barriers. The tender process has been completed, and construction will begin.”
The project will initially focus on the border with Greece, with plans to extend the wall further along the frontier in the coming years.
Declining Migration Activity
Governor Sezer also highlighted a significant decrease in irregular migration through Edirne, attributing this to intensified enforcement efforts.
“Our province is no longer a major route for migrants. Compared to last year, migration activity has dropped by 93%,” he said.
Security forces continue to conduct inspections across the region. Since the beginning of the year, 56 operations have been carried out, leading to the arrest of 110 human smugglers, who have been handed over to judicial authorities.
