Sergen Yalçın appointed as Beşiktaş Head Coach
In a statement to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), the club said:
"Our professional football team has signed a contract with Ali Rıza Sergen Yalçın as head coach until the end of the 2026–2027 season."
A Second Spell at Beşiktaş
This marks Yalçın’s second tenure in charge of the Black Eagles. During his first stint, which began midway through the 2019–2020 season and ended in late 2021, he led Beşiktaş to both a Süper Lig and Turkish Cup title, securing his place in the club’s history.
Under his leadership, Beşiktaş played 83 competitive matches, recording 47 wins, 12 draws, and 24 losses. The team scored 156 goals and conceded 107.
Historic Success and Dramatic Setbacks
Yalçın’s era began with great enthusiasm. His signing ceremony on January 30, 2020, was held at Dolmabahçe with 20,000 fans in attendance.
The pinnacle came in the 2020–2021 season, when Beşiktaş won the Süper Lig by edging out Galatasaray on goal difference and also lifted the Turkish Cup after a 2–0 victory against Antalyaspor.
However, the following 2021–2022 season turned into a nightmare. Beşiktaş struggled domestically, securing only six wins in 15 league matches, while also enduring a disastrous UEFA Champions League campaign, losing all six group-stage games and finishing without a single point. Amid mounting pressure, Yalçın resigned from his position.
European Struggles
Despite domestic success, Yalçın’s tenure in European competitions was disappointing. Beşiktaş failed to progress in both the Champions League and Europa League qualifiers in 2020–2021 and endured one of their worst-ever European seasons in 2021–2022.
Mission for Redemption
Now 52, Yalçın returns to Beşiktaş tasked with rebuilding the squad and restoring the team to its former glory. As the architect of the club’s last league title, he will look to deliver success once again in his second spell.
