Record summer reshapes football transfer market
The 2026 summer transfer window has gone down as one of the most expensive in football history, with Premier League clubs driving a wave of record-breaking deals across Europe.
Six players moved for more than €100 million, while 38 transfers reached at least €50 million. Three of the 10 most expensive transfers in football history were completed during the summer window.
Premier League clubs also broke the competition's all-time record for spending in a single transfer window, underlining the financial power of English football.
English clubs take 33 of top 50
Premier League teams accounted for 33 of the 50 most expensive transfers of the summer, far ahead of the other major European leagues.
Serie A followed with five deals, while LaLiga clubs completed four of the top 50 transfers. Ligue 1 clubs accounted for three, all involving Paris Saint-Germain, while three deals went to Saudi Pro League clubs.
The Bundesliga had two representatives, both involving Bayern Munich.
Fernández leads record deals
Manchester City completed the biggest transfer of the summer, paying €145 million for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández on deadline day. The deal matched the Premier League record transfer fee.
Chelsea were next after signing Morgan Rogers for €138 million, while Manchester City also completed the third-biggest deal by paying €135 million for Elliot Anderson.
Liverpool's €125 million move for Bradley Barcola and Real Madrid's €125 million signing of winger Yan Diomande ranked joint-fourth.
Tottenham's €108 million transfer of Sandro Tonali was the only other deal to break the €100 million mark.
Historic spending across Europe
The scale of the spending was reflected throughout the top 50. With 38 players changing clubs for €50 million or more, the window produced an unprecedented concentration of major transfers.
The figures also highlighted the growing financial gap between the Premier League and its European rivals, with English clubs accounting for two-thirds of the 50 most expensive deals of the summer.
