Istanbul to host 2027 Spanish Super Cup featuring Barcelona, Real Madrid
The 2027 Spanish Super Cup will be held in Istanbul, bringing Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid to Türkiye for a six-day tournament in February.
The Spanish Football Federation announced Thursday that the competition will take place at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium from Feb. 2-7, 2027.
Real Sociedad will face Real Madrid in the first semifinal, while defending champions Barcelona will take on Atletico Madrid in the second. The winners will advance to the final.
The tournament’s move to Istanbul represents a temporary change of venue after several recent editions were held in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia unavailable in 2027
The 2027 tournament could not be held in Saudi Arabia because of a scheduling conflict with the Asian Cup, which the country is scheduled to host in January and February 2027.
The Spanish federation, working with SELA, considered several bids before selecting Istanbul. Reports indicated that Miami and Qatar were also among the locations under consideration.
Istanbul will become only the third country outside Spain to host the Spanish Super Cup, following Morocco and Saudi Arabia. The competition is expected to return to Saudi Arabia in 2028.
Major European football venue
The Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul’s Başakşehir district has a capacity of about 77,500 and is one of Türkiye’s most prominent football venues.
The stadium has hosted two Champions League finals. Liverpool staged a dramatic comeback against AC Milan there in 2005, while Manchester City defeated Inter Milan in the 2023 final.
The selection of Istanbul provides the Spanish Super Cup with a high-profile European setting following several years in the Middle East.
The competition has been played in a four-team format since the 2019-20 season, bringing together the winners and runners-up of La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
The format has helped establish the Super Cup as an international football event, with the tournament broadcast in more than 150 countries.
Barcelona arrive as defending champions
Barcelona will enter the Istanbul tournament as defending champions after defeating Real Madrid 3-2 in the 2026 final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Raphinha scored twice for Barcelona, while Robert Lewandowski also found the net. Vinicius Junior and Gonzalo Garcia scored for Real Madrid.
The victory gave Barcelona a record-extending 16th Spanish Super Cup title and their second consecutive championship.
Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid in the 2027 semifinal, while Real Madrid will meet Real Sociedad.
A Barcelona-Real Madrid final would create another El Clasico on Turkish soil, although both sides must first advance from their respective semifinals.
Boost for Spanish football
The Spanish federation has emphasized the competition’s growing international reach and its financial importance to Spanish football.
Revenue generated by the tournament contributes to the wider football structure in Spain, supporting clubs across the men’s and women’s game at various levels.
Holding the 2027 edition in Istanbul will allow the federation to maintain the competition’s international presence while avoiding the scheduling conflict created by the Asian Cup.
For Istanbul, hosting the tournament adds another major international football event to a city that has become a regular venue for elite European competitions.
