Youth demand independence, security, but ignore politics

A new study of young Greeks reveals strong desires for independence and security but low trust in political institutions and growing acceptance of authoritarian ideas.

Conducted by Greece’s National Center for Social Research and published by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the study surveyed 1,000 people aged 14-29 in winter and spring 2024.

Key findings show 81.5% value independence as a top priority. Most live with their parents for financial reasons. While 57.4% feel optimistic about their personal future, 52% believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.

Over half believe personal connections are critical for employment. Interest in politics is low – only 16.1% say they are very engaged. Meanwhile, 30% support strong leadership without elections, and 14.4% see dictatorship as acceptable under certain conditions.

Concerns include healthcare (64.5%), unemployment and pensions. Gender differences emerged: Women expressed more anxiety, while men showed higher levels of political skepticism and “modern sexism.”
