Yeroulanos warns party must act within two months or rethink strategy
Opposition lawmaker Pavlos Yeroulanos said late on Thursday that Greece’s socialist PASOK party must take key organizational steps within the next two months or reconsider its strategy, warning it risked losing political momentum.
Yeroulanos, a parliamentary spokesman for PASOK, told Action24 television the party had performed strongly at the Thessaloniki International Fair earlier this month but said the window of opportunity was “small.”
“[PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis] has spoken about how important it is to step on the gas. We know the political system will find ways to push other solutions to the table,” he said.
He added that unless party bodies are convened and progress is made towards a “substantive congress” in that period, PASOK would have to rethink its approach.
Yeroulanos, a former culture minister, stopped short of calling Androulakis’ leadership into question. Androulakis was re-elected as party chief in a contest last year, in which Yeroulanos was eliminated in the first round.
Asked about the prospect of a new party led by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, Yeroulanos said such a development would draw public attention away from PASOK. “You will have great difficulty presenting your program, because the discussion will shift,” he said.
He added that a large pool of undecided voters was still seeking an alternative government.
Greece is due to hold its next parliamentary election in the summer of 2027. A recent Prorata poll put support for PASOK at 11.5%, while only 8% of respondents considered Androulakis suitable for prime minister.
