Wildfire blazing in Taşoz (Thasos) as terrain hampers firefighting efforts
A large wildfire that broke out late Wednesday night in the forested area of Glykadi on the northern Aegean island of Taşoz (Thasos) continued to burn on Thursday morning, with the situation described as difficult, according to reports.
The fire is burning in rugged, hard-to-access terrain, complicating containment efforts.
According to state broadcaster ERT, the blaze is active on two fronts: one in the Glykadi area on the island’s northernmost tip and another moving southeast from there toward the popular seaside resort of Pachis and the village of Rachoni. The situation on the second front appears to be improving.
Authorities are continuing efforts to contain the fire and protect nearby communities and infrastructure. ERT said that strong firefighting forces have been deployed to the scene, including reinforcements from Kavala. Dozens of volunteers have also joined the effort, supported by municipal water trucks and heavy machinery.
