October 28th, which this year (2024) falls on a Monday, is a public holiday in Greece.
Who is granted a holiday on October 28th?

It is classified as a mandatory holiday, during which the employment of wage earners and the operation of businesses, except those legally operating on Sundays and public holidays, is prohibited.

For businesses that are closed:

Employees who are paid on a daily wage basis receive their regular daily wage without any additional compensation.

Employees who are paid a monthly salary receive their full monthly wage without any extra compensation.

For businesses that are legally operating:

Employees who work on this day are entitled to:

If they are paid daily, they receive their usual wage plus a 75% increase based on the legal hourly wage for the hours they work.

If they are salaried:

a) For businesses that are typically closed on Sundays and public holidays but will operate on October 28th, they are entitled to 1/25 of their monthly salary plus a 75% increase based on the legal daily wage for the hours worked.

b) For businesses that normally operate on Sundays and public holidays, they are only entitled to a 75% increase based on 1/25 of the legal daily wage for the hours worked.

Additional Notes:

It is illegal to substitute a day off (rest day) for a mandatory public holiday.

The wage for October 28th is also due to employees on vacation, but the day is not counted as a workday for their leave.

If more favorable terms exist (e.g., through collective agreements, company regulations, customs, or tradition) regarding wage increases for working on public holidays or Sundays, those terms prevail.
