Varoufakis criticizes Athens, praises Türkiye’s diplomatic role in regional conflicts
In an interview with CNN TÜRK’s Athens correspondent, Varoufakis delivered strong remarks on geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, while also criticizing Greece’s alignment with Western powers.
“Greece Has Lost Its Independence”
Varoufakis claimed that Greece has become overly dependent on Washington and Tel Aviv, stating that the country has effectively lost its foreign policy autonomy.
“This relationship harms the interests of the Greek people. Greece has become a satellite—not only of the United States but also of Israel,” he said, accusing successive governments of deepening strategic ties with Israel since the late 1990s.
He also referenced surveillance and defense agreements, alleging that Greek authorities have relied on Israeli technology in controversial ways.
Harsh Words on Middle East Conflict
The outspoken economist was among the few European politicians to openly describe Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide,” while also criticizing broader military strategies in the region. He argued that ongoing conflicts serve to entrench instability rather than resolve it.
Varoufakis further suggested that long-standing tensions between Greece and Türkiye benefit arms industries, recalling his own military service experience to illustrate how both nations rely on similar defense systems.
“Turkey Achieved What Greece Could Not”
Highlighting Ankara’s diplomatic positioning, Varoufakis praised Türkiye’s ability to maintain dialogue with multiple sides in conflict zones.
“Türkiye has achieved what Greece could not even approach,” he said. “Your government has managed to maintain relations with both sides—for example in the war between Russia and Ukraine—which is extremely difficult during wartime.”
He pointed to Türkiye’s role in facilitating negotiations and maintaining economic channels, including energy trade, as an example of what he described as “rational and smart policy.”
Concerns Over Regional Escalation
Varoufakis warned against the risk of broader conflict, suggesting that an Israeli attack on Türkiye would be a “major strategic mistake,” while also describing Israel as a destabilizing force in the wider region.
He expressed hope that Türkiye could take on a greater mediation role, even between Washington and Tehran, to help de-escalate tensions.
“Given how serious this conflict has become, such a role would be extremely valuable,” he said, adding that much ultimately depends on decisions made in Washington.
A Divisive Voice in Greek Politics
Known for his outspoken positions, Varoufakis continues to challenge mainstream policy narratives in Greece, particularly on foreign relations and defense strategy. His latest remarks are likely to fuel further debate in both Athens and across the region.
