Turkish and Greek Foreign Ministers discuss controversial Maritime Jurisdiction Bill
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis held talks on June 10 in Sofia, where they discussed a proposed Turkish maritime jurisdiction law that has drawn attention in both countries.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Southeast European Cooperation Process Summit and marked the first direct discussion between the two foreign ministers on the legislation, which has been referred to in Turkish public discourse as the “Blue Homeland Law.”
According to reports, Gerapetritis conveyed Athens’ concerns regarding the proposal and stressed that unilateral actions would not contribute to resolving regional disputes.
Fidan reportedly responded that public commentary surrounding the legislation was based on incomplete information, emphasizing that Türkiye remains committed to international law and good-neighborly relations.
The discussions come amid renewed tensions in Greek-Turkish relations and follow months of debate over maritime jurisdiction and Eastern Mediterranean policy.
