Tsoukalas: PM must give reasons if he does not propose a second term for President Sakellaropoulou

Main opposition PASOK-Movement for Change spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas reiterated the party's positions regarding the election of the president of Greece, speaking on Wednesday to TV Action24. He also noted that ruling New Democracy and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in particular, must give reasons if they do not propose the renewal of President Katerina Sakellaropoulou's term, given that she was the prime minister's personal choice.
"PASOK in the last two months has been saying that the candidate should be from the centre-left, in order for there to be political balance, national unity and guarantee of institutional normality. Consequently, ths would also be PASOK's contribution, if we arrive at a candidate from the centre-left, and will show that it has influence as the main opposition."
According to Tsoukalas, PASOK will state its positions concerning the candidates for president when the prime minister states his own views, noting that the important thing was not to have a progressive candidate "for the record" but to have a progressive president.
"The institution of the President of the republic is not an institution for conducting party politics. It is primarily a consensual institution, because it must express national unity. If the prime minister comes up with a narrowly right-wing choice, simply to address [the government's] internal party issues, we will obviously then have a different proposal," concluded Tsoukalas.
