Trial of Spartiates deputies and Ilias Kasidiaris on voter deception to open on June 19
The trial of 11 deputies elected under the far-right Spartiates party, jailed former Golden Dawn deputy Ilias Kasidiaris, and a lawyer on charges of deceiving voters in the June 2023 national elections will open on June 19, it was made known on Friday.
The 13 will stand trial after charges leveled at the start of April, based on investigations by Greek Supreme Court chief prosecutor Georgia Adeilini following statements by party leader Vassilis Stigas, who is not among those charged.
Kasidiaris is among party deputies of the former Golden Dawn party who were jailed for running a criminal organization. According to the file, he is the instigator of voter deception, accused of running Spartiates party from jail. The lawyer facilitated contacts between the then-candidate deputies and Kasidiaris.
The case file opened in September 2023 when Spartiates leader Stigas accused his deputies of behind-the-scenes manipulation and Adeilini began an investigation herself into the accusations. Stigas testified twice before the Supreme Court prosecutor, who summoned the 13 defendants to testify as well. Following the investigation results, she pressed charges against them.
It should be noted that a recent Supreme Court decision banned the Spartiates party from running in the European elections on June 9.
