Golden Dawn trial: Prosecutor to present proposal on mitigating circumstances
Proceedings in the trial of the far-right group Golden Dawn continue today at the Five‑Member Court of Appeals for Felonies with the proposal of the presiding prosecutor, Kyriaki Stefanatou, on mitigating circumstances. The court is expected to issue its decision on the sentences for the 42 defendants found guilty in the coming days.
The prosecutor’s recommendation on whether mitigating circumstances should be granted, and to whom, marks a key stage of the process as it will determine the severity of the sentences.
Thirteen of the 42 convicted defendants have already secured one mitigating factor. Among them are former MPs Michail Arvanitis, who was granted the mitigating circumstance of a previously lawful life, Nikos Michos for sincere remorse, and Chrysovalantis Alexopoulos and Stathis Boukouras for good behavior after the act.
During the previous hearing, most defendants requested mitigating circumstances through their lawyers, including a previously lawful life, sincere remorse, good behavior after the act and the excessive duration of the trial.
Among them is Giorgos Roupakias, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of musician Pavlos Fyssas. He requested three mitigating circumstances in an effort to reduce his sentence.
