Tensions escalate in the Aegean: Türkiye issues Navtex, Greece responds with military drill

A new crisis has erupted between Ankara and Athens as tensions in the Aegean continue to rise. While Türkiye’s Navtex for the Piri Reis research vessel remains on the agenda, Greece has taken a striking step by launching a surprise military drill.

Greek Military Exercise
According to the Hellenic General Staff, the 24-hour exercise involved deploying ground forces from central Greece to the Evros border. Troops were also airlifted to islands and islets in the eastern Aegean. The drill included most of Greece’s navy and 60 fighter jets.

Greek media outlets linked the exercise directly to Turkey’s Piri Reis ship. However, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias denied the claim, stating the maneuvers were unrelated to the vessel.

Türkiye’s Navtex Response
Ankara reacted swiftly. A Navtex issued by the İzmir Office of Navigation, Hydrography and Oceanography underlined that 23 islands stretching from Thasos to Kastellorizo (Meis) are “demilitarized” under international treaties.

Speculation Over Piri Reis
Greek media also speculated on scenarios regarding the Piri Reis. The vessel’s delayed departure from İzmir was interpreted as a possible “technical malfunction,” “bad weather,” or even a “change of decision” by Türkiye.

Continental Shelf Dispute Revived
Since the Piri Reis route covers both Turkish and international waters, the mission has reignited the long-standing dispute over the continental shelf in the Aegean.

Türkiye on Alert
Sources from Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense (MSB) said they are closely monitoring developments:

“We are on alert and observing,” the statement read.
