Staff arrests cause border delays, hours extended
The Mavromati Customs Control Station at the Greek-Albanian border in Thesprotia will extend its service hours from August 4 to September 30, the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) announced.
To alleviate the heavy traffic caused by recent staff shortages, the station will operate daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., ensuring smoother passage for trucks and regular bus routes.
This decision comes in the wake of the arrest of all 14 employees at Mavromati earlier this month on corruption charges. Following the arrests, the station was left with only two staff members, leading to significant delays and long queues at the border.
In addition to the extended hours at Mavromati, travelers and freight operators can also use the Kakavia Customs Station to ease crossing congestion.
Authorities continue to investigate the allegations while working to restore normal operations and reduce disruptions for cross-border traffic.
