Schools: Absences, exemptions from classes and mobile phone use – What applies in the new academic year
Absences, exemptions from certain lessons, and mobile phone rules are among the key issues that concern both students and parents as the new school year begins in Greece. The Ministry of Education has clarified what applies for 2025–26.
According to current legislation, students may miss up to 10% of the total hours for each subject.
For example, in a subject with 150 annual teaching hours, a student is allowed about 15 absences without consequences.
Exceeding this threshold could endanger final exam eligibility, and in extreme cases, force repetition of the school year.
Absences are now recorded electronically. Parents are notified in cases of repeated unjustified absences, and persistent issues may be referred to authorities.
Teachers emphasize that the rule is not meant as a punitive measure but as a safeguard for maintaining the quality of education.
Exemptions from Lessons
Students may request exemptions from specific subjects such as Physical Education, Music, and Religion, following a formal application process.
All-Day School Program
In Primary Schools, students may leave at 14:55, 15:50, or 17:30, depending on the schedule block.
In Kindergartens, children may remain until 16:00 or 17:30 under the “Enhanced All-Day Program.” Early departures are not permitted.
The use of mobile phones and camera-equipped devices is strictly prohibited on school premises.
Any devices found outside the student’s bag are handed to the school administration and returned only at the end of the school day.
Exceptions apply only to medical-use devices, with an official doctor’s note.
No Regular Classes on September 26
On Friday, September 26, 2025, the Panhellenic School Sports Day will be observed. Students must attend school, but instead of regular lessons, they will participate in sports activities and events.
The aim, according to the Ministry of Education, is to introduce students to sports, foster fair play, and highlight the importance of physical exercise in daily life.
It should be noted that while no classes will take place that day, absences will still be recorded, and non-attendance cannot be justified.
