Restrictions on animal transport continue after smallpox outbreak among sheep
A ban on the transport of sheep and goats for fattening and reproduction was imposed throughout Greece by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food on Thursday, following more smallpox infections of sheep.
The ministry had imposed ten days of restrictions, and extended the restrictions to limit the spread of the disease.
It allowed the transport of sheep and goats from summer pastures, under conditions that include inspections and a 30-day stay in the receiving farm facilities once they the transport is complete. In addition, it allowed the tranport of sheep and goats for slaughter in specific regional areas free of smallpox: Attica, North Aegean, South Aegean, Ionian Islands, Crete, Western Greece, Epirus, and Western Macedonia.
The ministry also issued directions on disinfection of facilties, equipment, and vehicles, for all facilities receiving the animals.
The next epidemiological review by the ministry's General Veterinarian Directorate will take place on November 8, when updated directives will be issued.
