Rally and march in downtown Athens completed, traffic restored

The march to Parliament by striking public- and private-sector workers, organised  during the 24-hour general strike called by trade unions, concluded on Wednesday afternoon.

As the General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE) said in an announcement, there was mass participation by workers, unemployed people, pensioners, young men and women, who joined GSEE's rally and march in downtown Athens in support of demands for higher wages, collective bargaining and better protection of labour rights.

With a central slogan "We want wage increases to live - Collective Agreements to protect ourselves - work and life with rights", the demonstrators sent a clear message to the government that there must be immediate and substantial measures to ensure decent standards of living.

A march to Parliament in Syntagma Square followed the rally, where a GSEE delegation presented a resolution of protest to the president of Parliament and the representatives of the parties.

Traffic in downtown Athens has been restored following the conclusion of the protest.
