Greece’s primary education system lost 17,538 students in just one year, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority, highlighting the growing impact of the country’s demographic decline.

The decrease was recorded exclusively in public schools, while enrollment in private schools rose during the same period.

Kindergarten enrollment fell from 173,350 students in the 2022–2023 school year to 167,969 in 2023–2024, marking a decline of 5,381 pupils.

An even sharper drop was recorded in elementary schools, where student numbers fell from 574,047 to 561,890, a loss of 12,157 students.

Officials attribute the overall reduction to Greece’s ongoing demographic crisis. Primary education, as the compulsory entry level for all children, reflects demographic trends most directly as they emerge numerically.

The impact is more pronounced at the elementary level, as some parents delay enrolling their children in kindergarten at age four, opting instead to begin schooling at age five. The figures underscore Greece’s continuing struggle with declining birth rates and the resulting pressure on the public education system.
