Police officer arrested for involvement in drug-related cases
A long-serving police officer with extensive experience in the force’s narcotics department has been arrested for involvement in drug-related cases following an investigation by the Internal Affairs Service.
The uniformed officer, 42, had been reassigned to a less active background role in recent months as a result of facing a series of allegations.
They include blackmailing drug traffickers, offering to exclude them from his department’s records in exchange for bribes, and demanding payment to testify in court as a witness to facilitates more favorable legal outcomes for traffickers.
The officer’s arrest was reportedly prompted by incriminating conversations through the encrypted SKY-ECC communication platform.
In the lead-up, authorities abroad had sent the Greek police a file containing thousands of conversations and text messages, which it analyzed.
The police officer’s arrest marks the first case, based on this file, to be presented before the court.
The Internal Affairs Service’s investigation also implicates two individuals who are not police officers, while, in addition, evidence suggests the involvement of additional uniformed personnel. However, it remains uncertain whether these officers will face prosecution.
